An update to business waste regulations in Republic of Ireland.

As of 1st July 2023, all businesses in Ireland were instructed to meet Enhanced Commercial Waste Regulations, introduced to incentivise waste charging and other changes for waste collection.

As reported by MyWaste.IE, a recent study published by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2018 revealed 70% of waste in a commercial waste bin could be pushed away from landfill and towards recycling. The study confirmed that significant loses in recyclable material were being made, pushing waste costs up due to poor segregation.

The aim of the new regulations is to not only incentivise businesses to improve segregation, but to increase sustainability across the whole commercial sector of Ireland.

The regulation will mean all waste collection companies will be required to provide a residual, mixed dry recyclable, and bio-waste bin to all their commercial customers. All waste collected must then be weighed and volumes will be communicated back to the customer.

The biggest change to collections is the introduction of a new price plan. This will see waste collection companies put all commercial customers onto a price plan, ensuring the cost to the customer for mixed dry recyclable or bio-waste is less than the cost of disposal for municipal waste.

The introduction of this measure should not result in higher waste collection charges for commercial waste collection customers and will incentivise better recycling through improved onsite segregation.
