Reconomy Staff Come Together For Beach Litter Pick

As part of this year’s Great British Spring Clean, run in association with Keep Britain Tidy, Reconomy employees have come together and organised a litter pick on Stokes Bay – a shingle beach located near to Gosport in Hampshire.

For over 2 hours, a team of Reconomy staff members combed the beach, collecting plastic bottles, aluminium cans, food wrappers and other types of waste that had either been left by visitors or washed up by the tide.

The beach clean was support by Surfers Agaisnt Sewage as part of their million mile clean campaign https://www.sas.org.uk/our-work/beach-cleans/organise-beach-clean/a registered charity which works with local businesses and communities to highlight the impact of plastic pollution on the seas and oceans.

Andy Butler, Strategic Development Director at Reconomy, said:

“Gone are the days when Central Government would fund litter picking, therefore if we want to improve the environment and make a difference, it’s up to us all to get out there and do something about it.

“Because of COVID, the last year and a half has been really difficult. Taking part in something like a litter pick allows people to get out into the fresh air and be with other people, whilst still remaining socially distanced.”

All Reconomy employees are given the opportunity to organise and participate in a day of paid volunteering activity each year. This can include business mentoring, supporting local schools, charity work, or participating in environmental initiatives. In 2019-20, Reconomy staff members collectively spent 935 hours carrying out volunteering work.
