Construction waste management refers to the process of reducing, reusing, recycling, and properly disposing of waste materials generated during construction, renovation, and demolition projects. The goal is to limit environmental impact, improve efficiency, and comply with legal regulations.
Managing waste on a construction site involves several key steps:
- Planning & Prevention – Design projects to limit waste generation.
- Segregation – segregate materials such as wood, metal, concrete, and plastics for reuse or recycling.
- Recycling & Reuse – Use materials that can be repurposed or recycled (e.g., crushed concrete for backfill).
- Waste Tracking – Monitor waste levels and keep records to ensure compliance.
- Proper Disposal – Dispose of non-recyclable waste in compliance with regulations.
- Education & Training – Collaboration is key. Train workers on waste reduction strategies and correct disposal methods.
The most common construction waste materials include:
- Concrete & bricks – Often recycled into aggregates.
- Wood – Can be reused or processed into biomass fuel.
- Metals (steel, aluminum, copper) – Highly recyclable.
- Plastics – Increasingly recycled but still a challenge.
- Drywall (gypsum board) – Can sometimes be recycled or repurposed.
Responsibility for waste management on a construction site typically falls on:
- The Principal Contractor – Oversees waste management strategies and ensures compliance.
- Site Manager – Implements waste management plans and coordinates segregation and disposal.
- Workers & Subcontractors – Follow waste procedures and ensure proper handling of materials.
- Waste Management providers, such as Reconomy Connect – Collect, transport, and process waste in compliance with regulations.
The amount of construction waste going to landfill varies by country. In the UK, approximately 25–30% of construction waste still ends up in landfills, though efforts to reduce this are increasing through recycling and reuse initiatives. Globally, construction and demolition waste account for 30–40% of total waste generated.
